Do you need to prevent frequently clogged drains in your home? Searcy Arkansas residents will find the following tips helpful.
A kitchen sink usually clogs because of a buildup of grease and food that get caught in it. To keep the problem to a minimum, don’t pour grease down the drain. Another problem I’ve found repeatedly is coffee grounds. Throw them out. Don’t wash them down.
Hair and soap are usually at fault in bathroom drains. Clean out strainers and pop-ups regularly. Some strainers are held in place by screws.
There are many chemical drain cleaners on the market; you can use one of them preventively (only about once a month) before a clog forms. Be sure and read labels, and match cleaners with the material you’re trying to dissolve. Alkalis cut grease, acids dissolve soap and hair. Before you pour the cleaner down the drain, block the overflow vent with rags. When using chemicals, follow these safety guidelines: Work in a well-ventilated room and wear rubber gloves and goggles. Don’t mix chemicals; mixing an acid and an alkali cleaner can cause an explosion. Don’t look down the drain after pouring in a chemical; the solution frequently boils up and gives off toxic fumes. Never plunge if you’ve recently used a chemical.
Consider using equal parts baking soda and vinegar instead of a commercial cleaner against soap and hair. First dump the baking soda down the drain, then the vinegar. Let the mixture fizz, then flush the drain with boiling water.
